    The Boat Party

    The Boat Article

    NY Daily News - May 5, 1989

“Everybody, but everybody at the party aboard British media mogul Robert Maxwell’s yacht Wednesday night had to doff their shoes before boarding the plush-carpeted “Lady Ghislaine.” Maxwell insisted, and his guests cooperated, including Donald Trump (minus Ivana), who has a much bigger yacht and was happy to compare notes with Maxwell. [Note: This is in reference to the Kingdom 5KR, originally owned by Adnan Khashoggi, international arms dealer and uncle of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi.] There were John Tower [Republican Senator in charge of the Tower Commission, which investigated Iran Contra]; ex-Navy secretary John Lehman [Reagan appointee 1981-1987], now with Paine Webber; lawyer Tom Bolan [law partner of Roy Cohn]; literary agent Mort Janklow [clients include both Nancy and Ronald Reagan for their memoirs]; UN envoy Thomas Pickering [currently a board member at the world’s biggest pipe company, OAO TMK, in Moscow and Chairman of the Rostropovich-Vishnevskaya Foundation, “a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC that supports programs to improve the health of children worldwide”]; and Peter Kalikow, owner of the New York Post [awarded the Israel Peace Medal in 1982; created a super PAC for Herman Cain that was later revealed to be entirely financed by his donations]; Maxwell’s daughter, Ghislaine, and his niece, Helene Atkin of Macmillan, the publishing house Maxwell recently took over."

    What boat are they on?

After Khashoggi ran into financial problems, he sold the yacht in 1988 to the Sultan of Brunei, who in turn sold her to Donald Trump for $29 million. After a refit, Trump renamed her Trump Princess. Then she was sold in 1991[3] to Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal for $20 million.

    Who previously owned the boat?

Sultan of Brunei: He became the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam on 5 October 1967, after his father abdicated. Like his father, he has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, of which Brunei was a protectorate until 1984.

Adnan Khashoggi: In 1988, Khashoggi was arrested in Switzerland, accused of concealing funds, and held for three months. Khashoggi stopped fighting extradition when the U.S. prosecutors reduced the charges to obstruction of justice and mail fraud and dropped the more serious charges of racketeering and conspiracy. In 1990, a United States federal jury in Manhattan acquitted Khashoggi and Imelda Marcos, widow of the exiled Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, of racketeering and fraud.

Khashoggi was implicated in the Iran–Contra affair as a key middleman in the arms-for-hostages exchange along with Iranian arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar and, in a complex series of events, was found to have borrowed money for these arms purchases from the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) with Saudi and United States backing.

    The Khashoggi Giuliani Connection

    Charged with Fraud

October 22, 1988 - New York Times Article

Ferdinand E. Marcos was indicted yesterday in a racketeering case that includes charges that he embezzled more than $100 million from the Philippine Government and used the money to buy three buildings in New York City.

The Marcoses were ordered to appear for arraignment on Oct. 31 in Federal District Court in Manhattan, said Rudolph W. Giuliani, the United States Attorney in Manhattan.

Mr. Giuliani stressed that the indictment accused the Marcoses of continuing criminal conduct after coming to this country. That was an ‘‘important factor’’ in the decision to indict them, he said.

Prosecutor ‘Guaranteed’ Conviction in Marcos Case

    July 4, 1990 - AP News Article

Former federal prosecutor Rudolph Giuliani ″guaranteed″ a conviction against Ferdinand Marcos in the case that ended with the acquittals of his widow and Adnan Khashoggi.

The State Department memorandum said Giuliani believed the evidence was so strong that there was no reason to offer Marcos a plea bargain.
